Food Safety Training

The food safety courses I offer are taught by me. I am happy to advise on which course may be appropriate but the decision lies ultimately with you. The learning outcomes are there for you to read through.

Aside of the learning outcomes being achieved, within all courses I go over what to expect from a visit by the EHO, areas to be aware of and current good practices and recommendations. There is the opportunity to ask questions after the course via email if there is anything you need further assistance with.

Please note that in the UK, food handlers legally have to have received appropriate training, instruction and supervision but they don’t have to hold a formal food safety certificate to prepare or sell food, although many food businesses will prefer that they do. The level of training received needs to be in line with the food handler’s work activity or when referring to HACCP “adequate”. The necessary skills may be obtained through on-the-job training, self-study or relevant prior experience. The benefit of completing a course and holding a certificate is that the training received is easily verifiable, supports a positive food safety culture and can form part of a due diligence defence if needed.

UK food safety certificates don’t have an expiry date. It is left to the discretion of the food business operator or often the Environmental Health Officer to decide whether a refresher course is needed. This may be as a result of changes to legislation or technological developments in food safety. It is however common practice to refresh training every 3 years and most people do. I would advise to do so. As part of an Environmental Health inspection employees as well as food business operators are frequently asked questions about current good practice and their understanding of food safety management matters so refresher training ensures that they are current and competent.
